Pat Maher: As a partner in The Maher Group, LLC, Pat is responsible for the initiation of successful environmental programs for his clients. Pat evaluates an organization’s facilities, recommends eco-friendly products and procedures, conducts energy audits, reviews an organization’s carbon footprint, and develops opportunities for cost savings along with other benefits. Previously, Pat was with Marriott International, Inc. for 23 years. Prior to this, Pat worked for a private firm where he was responsible for directing all electrical engineering and design for the Baltimore Convention Center expansion. Pat also helps American Hotel & Lodging Association members answer their sustainability questions as the association’s “Green Guru” (http://www.ahla.com/green.aspx?id=24528).

The Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy: A New Paradigm in Transformational Energy Research

In Spring of 2009 President Obama announced $400M in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funding for a new agency – the Advanced Research Projects Agency, or ARPA-E, an Agency created in 2007 through the America COMPETES Act. ARPA-E was created to fund high risk, high reward transformational research to reduce energy related emissions, reduce imports of energy from foreign sources, improve energy efficiency in all economic sectors, and ensure American technological lead in advanced energy technologies. In only 15 months the agency has awarded over $350M in support of 121 projects across the energy landscape, including renewable energy, biofuels, building efficiency, carbon capture, and the electrification of transportation. This lecture will describe the history and mission of ARPA-E, how the Agency and its projects differ from other branches of the Department of Energy, and highlight some of the revolutionary technologies currently supported by ARPA-E.

- Dr. Eric Toone is the Deputy Director for Technology, responsible for oversight of all ARPA-E Technology and directs the ARPA-E’s Electrofuels program.

Draper Richards Foundation Summer Associate 2011
Position Description:
The Draper Richards Foundation (www.DraperRichards.org) seeks a summer intern to support mission-critical business analyses. After nine years as a leading social venture fund, Draper Richards is poised to expand its impact in a second fund with $25MM in assets to be deployed to 50 entrepreneurial organizations.
The intern will support key initiatives toward this second fund’s effectiveness in catalyzing social ventures. Specific initiatives will be defined closer to the engagement, but could include: compilation and assessment of impact metric systems used across social venture funds, creation of marketing and social media strategy for the new fund, optimization of intranet for Draper Richards grantees with seminal and cutting edge media on the social sector, deep dives into potential routes for environmental dealflow, steps required for Draper Richards to support organizations of mixed profit statuses, etc…Great candidates will help to match their interest and skills to the opportunities at Draper Richards.
The role will be based out of the Foundation’s San Francisco office. Candidates must have passion for and dedication to the social sector. 2011 Hult Global Case Challenge
The Hult Global Case Challenge aims to identify innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing problems through crowd-sourcing ideas and solutions form the world’s best and brightest business school students. The annual competition is held simultaneously across all of Hult’s campuses in Boston, London, Dubai, Shanghai and San Francisco. Over 100 student teams tackle a challenge set by a leading social entrepreneur. To ensure the students can make a real contribution to the problem, Hult offers a USD 1 million prize to help implement the winning idea. This prize makes the Hult Global Case Challenge the most prestigious business school competition in the world.
The 2010 Hult Global Case Challenge saw over 300 business school students from Harvard, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford, Oxford, Cambridge, Hult, Imperial, INSEAD, Columbia, and other renowned schools present their strategies to help One Laptop per Child redefine the way the poorest children in the world learn.
In 2011 the School has teamed up with the Clinton Global Initiative to redefine the challenge that will be given to students. The Clinton Global Initiative is an organization created by President Bill Clinton that has over 2,000 members, all of which have made a commitment to make a positive difference in the world. One of these members will be selected to set the challenge for students and will receive the USD 1 million prize.

Develop Business Plan for Rollout of Socially Conscious Agriculture Concept
A former CEO in my firm’s network is looking for an HBS student to help develop a business plan to roll out a successful operation growing vegetables hydroponically, with a business model serving the social good. Former consultants with an entrepreneurial bent would be ideal candidates for this part-time project in the coming months, with the potential to develop into something over the summer or longer term. EC Field Study with PowerMax Global (PMG)
Founded in 2007, PowerMax Global (PMG) is a startup company in the Clean Tech/Smart Grid space. PMG’s mission is to deliver the benefits of advanced power line communications (PLC) to all Smart Grid stakeholders, including utilities, original equipment manufacturers and consumers. PMG offers products that provide reliable, real-time, two-way communication over power lines at low cost. Our products enable proactive power consumption management, power grid monitoring/control, clean energy source management, and electric vehicle charge management. The company is in the process of updating its business plan, and is looking for a team of business school student(s) to assist the PMG executive team, board of directors, and board of advisors.
The Smart Grid is a global effort to modernize the current electric grid, while adding a two-way communications network that connects utilities to consumers. The Smart Grid will enable more efficient supply/demand management, integrate renewable sources of energy, and provide the infrastructure to roll out electric vehicles. Utilizing advanced power-line communications technology, PMG offers smart meter and communications products to utilities, original equipment manufacturers, and consumers.
Working directly with the PMG CEO (HBS alum), the student team will review and update the business plan. This will include market analysis (market sizing and segmentation), detailed competitive assessment, product positioning & pricing, sales & marketing strategy, and financial models. The team will also assist in devising a detailed capital-raising strategy, starting from PMG’s current seed capital stage. The project is expected to start in January 2011, and take 8-12 weeks.

Part-time work as an Editor or Energy Research Associate (See attached PDFs)
There are two types of roles: Industry Editor & Industry Research.
Both can be completed remotely. In a nutshell, the work ranges from a brief (3 wk) deep dive into an industry to a longer-term (3 mo) role interviewing industry experts and managing social media. Hours typically range from 2 to 5 per week, depending on the role.
